The evolution of music education in Ticino primary schools from 1894 to the present

Subject content and teacher training

Supervisor: Anna Galassetti

This study traces the development of music education in Ticino primary schools from 1894 to the present, relating official curricula, subject content and teacher training. Through a comparative analysis of sources, it charts the transition from Singing—initially marginal—to Singing and Music and finally to competency-based Music Education. It highlights the role of specialist teachers, introduced in the 1950s, and the influence of the active methods of Orff, Dalcroze and Willems. In parallel, it follows professional training from the teacher-training college to the DFA, showing how teacher preparation, classroom practice and the discipline’s institutional recognition have changed over time and within contemporary educational debate in Ticino.

Performing from memory in public

Memorisation methods and techniques for confident public performance during the early years of harp study

Supervisor: Lorenza Pollini
Co-supervisor: Giulia Nuti

This thesis explores how young harpists can be taught to memorise a piece and perform it confidently in public. It proposes a method based on analysing notation, tonality, rhythm, melodic design and formal structure, with particular emphasis on “visualisation memory”. Testing with several pupils assesses its effectiveness during the early years of study. The work also considers the harp’s technical features, the music stand as a possible psychological barrier, muscular tension, relaxation and the teacher’s role as guide and personal coach. Memory, awareness and emotional preparation converge to support a more stable, calm and conscious public performance.
