The evolution of music education in Ticino primary schools from 1894 to the present
Subject content and teacher training
Supervisor: Anna Galassetti
This study traces the development of music education in Ticino primary schools from 1894 to the present, relating official curricula, subject content and teacher training. Through a comparative analysis of sources, it charts the transition from Singing—initially marginal—to Singing and Music and finally to competency-based Music Education. It highlights the role of specialist teachers, introduced in the 1950s, and the influence of the active methods of Orff, Dalcroze and Willems. In parallel, it follows professional training from the teacher-training college to the DFA, showing how teacher preparation, classroom practice and the discipline’s institutional recognition have changed over time and within contemporary educational debate in Ticino.
